The premiere issue of Deaf Life Japan profiles the seven chief staffers who have made the magazine a reality (clockwise from top: Atom Sunada, Art Director; Arisa Kodo, Magazine Staff; Matthew S. Moore, Publisher; Kazushi Matsuda, Art Director; Hideaki Nasu, Deputy Editor; Yasuko (“Gero”) Sato, Editor-in-Chief; and Yurie Okada, Magazine Staff. The first issue includes interviews with movie actress Midori Kida, ceramicist-sculptor Shinhiko Hukuzima, and indie filmmaker Nobuhiro Odate. There’s also a profile of scuba diver-photographer Hiroki Yoshida, with several full-color photos. There are also adaptations of DEAF LIFE’s popular features “For Hearing People Only” and “Deaf People in History“ (including a “Deaf Americans” history feature).
